HHS pushes back ICD-10 deadline
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has postponed the ICD-10 deadline to a to-be-determined date.
In extending the deadline, the department acknowledged concerns that many in the health care industry had about meeting ICD-10’s previously established deadline of Oct. 1, 2013, in addition to a number of other IT-related mandates such as Meaningful Use requirements.
“We have heard from many in the provider community who have concerns about the administrative burdens they face in the years ahead,” said HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. “We are committing to work with the provider community to reexamine the pace at which HHS and the nation implement these important improvements to our health care system.”
According to HHS, ICD-10 will apply to entities covered under HIPAA and will provide more robust and specific data that will help improve patient care and enable the exchange of health care data with that of the rest of the world that has long been using ICD-10.
Catch Data Systems will continue to provide updates to the situation as more information becomes available.
